NELUMBO nucifera - LOTUS
- This stunning Lily who's leaves and flowers rise up to a metre out of the water is
native to Northern Australia, New Guinea and tropical Asia. Fat rhizomes, seeds and young
shoots are eaten by all cultures where it naturally occurs. Leaves are used as a food
wrapper for steaming by the Chinese. It will grow in up
to 3m of slow flowing or still water. Often grown in large pots as an ornamental.
We have several varieties including; 1. Paleface, a white
flower with pink tips; 2. Pink Double & 2 native varieties
collected from the Mary & Ross rivers in Qld. Because the native varieties don't produce
storage rhizomes it is difficult to ship & propagate them vegetatively.
We have a limited
amount of seed available each year and these are sent out with germination instructions @
$3 per seed plus postage. Please keep in mind we have a minimum order
policy of $25. For varieties 1 & 2 we send out a starter pack of at least
two propagules (a propagule being a rhizome or small growing plant bare rooted) this
increases the chance for a sure start. Care should be taken not to break the tender shoots
when unpacking or planting. The best time to plant and the only period we ship propagules
is in spring to the end of December at the latest. Starter packs are $40 per variety
which includes postage & packing. Information on germination
& growing Lotus.
